We’re turning our lawn into a wildflower / pollinator meadow. It’s beneficial for bees, birds and passing dogs. Small children and Instagram influencers love it.
A naturally sustaining meadow is a bit of work at first – we’ve planted a lot of wild flowers, small flowering plants, and drought resistant ground cover. We’re doing this in patches, adding a new area every spring. Once it gets established, it is no work at all.
We get our wild flower seeds from West Coast Seeds. Look for their Alternative Lawn Wildflower Mix and they also have a Xeriscape Mix that is drought tolerant.
While you’re in the neighbourhood, you might want to visit the butterfly garden further up Sunset Blvd.
You Can Do It Too
The City of North Vancouver is transforming some former grass spaces to pollinator meadows. They have some excellent resources about pollinator gardens and pollinator meadows here.
